Electrically regenerated ion-exchange technology: Leveraging faradaic reactions and assessing the effect of co-ion sorption

Capacitive deionization (CDI) technologies have the potential to become cost-competitive alternatives reverse osmosis for treatment of brackish waters. In this study, we report our findings on effect co-ion sorption and faradaic side reactions ion exchange resin functionalized desalination electrodes which passively capture salt reject it upon charging. This system, previously reported refer as electrically regenerated (ERI), avoids use expensive membranes in an effort save costs. Surprisingly, find that, compared a reference CDI ERI most effectively at low applied voltages (0.5 mg/cm 3 0.8 V). Both systems also seem suffer from effects negatively impact adsorption. However, Faradaic higher (1 V 1.2 V) track via pH measurements, serve detriment but facilitate functionality ERI.
